Isoveljensä Joen kuoleman jälkeen sulkeutuneen bostonilaisen talonmiehen Lee Chandlerin elämä muuttuu kuullessaan että Joe on nimennyt hänet poikansa Patrickin huoltajaksi. Vastentahtoisesti Lee palaa Manchester-by-the-Seahin 15-vuotiaan Patrickin luokse.
